A creative territory

Plaine Commune, accessible art in the public space.

A territory of culture and creativity, Plaine Commune is renowned for the vitality of its artists and craftspeople. As the cradle of street art and hip-hop in France, and home to the world’s largest antiques and arts and crafts flea market, the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen, as well as a number of third-party cultural and artistic venues run by committed artists’ collectives, Plaine Commune is also strongly committed to the development of art in the public space and cultural urban planning initiatives.

Large, vibrant cultural venues

The region’s artistic vitality can be measured by the number of cultural institutions that create, produce and disseminate a wide variety of practices: circus, theater, equestrian theater, cinema: TheAcadémie Fratellini, the Théâtre Gérard Philippe, the Théâtre de la Commune and the Théâtre équestre Zingaro, the Maison du théâtre et de la Danse and the Centre culturel municipal Jean Houdremont in Epinay-sur-Seine, the Studio Théâtre de Stains and many other cultural venues keep the artistic pulse beating on a daily basis, offering a rich and diversified program for all.

The French cradle of urban culture

Launched in 2016, Street Art Avenue is a trail of over 40 works of art, all along the Canal Saint-Denis, between Porte de la Villette in Paris and the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. All the big names in street art have stopped and created here. And this continues every year. But Street Art is present everywhere in the area, like around the Puces de Saint-Ouen, or on numerous businesses in Aubervilliers, La Courneuve, etc.

Plaine Commune is also the area where hip-hop continues to live and renew itself: the hip-hop and urban culture festival held in Saint-Denis at the end of October each year, Espace 1789 in Saint-Ouen, the future hip-hop museum in Saint-Denis…

Art in the public space

Plaine Commune is also a territory where contemporary art is exhibited in public spaces.

Between the Victoires trail, created around the Saint-Denis Canal for the Paris 2024 Games, the artworks in the athletes’ village or other Olympic sites created for the event, but also the future works created in the Grand Paris Express stations, such as Saint-Denis Pleyel or La Courneuve Six routes, or the ephemeral artistic interventions that accompany urban projects, art is present everywhere and thus participates in the transformation of the city.

Dynamic cultural third places, open to others

Le 6B or la Briche in Saint-Denis, Mains d’œuvres in Saint-Ouen, le Point Fort, Poush, Les Laboratoires in Aubervilliers, l’Eclair in Epinay-sur-Seine, and many others!

Plaine Commune is home to a large number of cultural, festive and creative third places, run by committed artists’ collectives. Throughout the year, they offer intense programming for all publics, where sharing and conviviality are not empty words.

A land of flavors and know-how

Plaine Commune has historically been a melting pot for arts and crafts.

Nearly 120 workshops are located throughout the region, enhancing the diversity of the works and objects created. Ceramists, cabinetmakers, jewelry designers, metal sculptors, featherworkers, glassblowers and so many other artists and craftspeople manufacture, create and innovate on a daily basis, showcasing their creations either at dedicated events, in their own workshops, or in permanent or temporary spaces throughout the area’s towns and cities.

The region’s strong identity led to the first edition of the Ob’Art Plaine Commune trade show in October 2024, a high point in the promotion of this wealth of craftsmanship.
