Urban cultures

Culture at the heart of the suburbs

Plaine Commune is a lively playground for urban cultures. From street art to concerts, the destination pushes back the boundaries of creativity. A bubbling crossroads where art and music make the streets and public spaces vibrate. From hip-hop to graffiti and rap, discover how urban cultures are making the region pulsate.

Art on the walls and in the city

In Plaine Commune, street art has arrived in force, transforming walls and buildings into giant canvases. It’s not just a fad, but a real creative power grab.

From graffiti to monumental frescoes, the streets vibrate to the rhythm of urban art, with works that shake up and challenge. It’s a field of experimentation where the city becomes a limitless space for expression.

Rap and hip-hop for a pioneering region

Seine-Saint-Denis is the cradle of hip-hop in France. Joey Starr, Kool Shen, Mac Tyer… these rap legends grew up in Plaine Commune, and their impact on the history of French rap is still felt today.

But that’s not all: in 1984, the first hip-hop festival was held at the Fort d’Aubervilliers, a veritable kick-off for breakdance in France. Today, this culture is ubiquitous and shared everywhere, but it’s here, in Plaine Commune, that it all began to shake up.

Line 13 major spot for urban culture

La Ligne 13 in Saint-Denis is the spot where the local scene comes alive. Located in the Maison de la Jeunesse, this concert hall offers an eclectic program of jazz, rock, rap and world music, as well as events such as the Festival hip-hop et des cultures urbaines and the Saint-Denis jazz club.

Between concerts and associative projects, it’s a veritable cultural hub where Dionysian youth can express themselves unfiltered.

Hip-hop and urban culture festival

Since 1990, the Festival Hip-Hop et des Cultures Urbaines has been celebrating rap, slam, dance, graffiti, literature, stand-up, DJ sets and photo exhibitions for two weeks in October. An unmissable event for experiencing urban culture in all its forms, with unique performances, exciting encounters and a vibrant energy that gets the city’s heart beating.
